Event Recap: Hope in Action – Responding to Crisis with Resilience and Impact

On Tuesday, December 17, 2024, Bloom brought together a vibrant community of changemakers for an inspiring online gathering titled “Hope in Action: Responding to Crisis with Resilience and Impact“. Participants were united by a shared mission: to support and amplify the efforts of social enterprises, bringing relief and hope to communities affected by ongoing crises.

The event opened with a heartfelt welcome by David Munir Nabti, CEO and founder of Bloom, acknowledging the turbulent times we’re all navigating while celebrating the incredible resilience and creativity of those in attendance. With a clear focus on fostering positive economic, social, and political transformation, the gathering aimed to build momentum, engage supporters, and catalyze meaningful collaborative efforts.

Spotlight on Inspiring Changemakers

The evening featured passionate presentations from four social enterprises, each making a remarkable impact in their communities.

WingWoman Lebanon – Millie Pemberton

Millie Pemberton introduced WingWoman Lebanon, an organization committed to providing affordable reusable diapers and period pads. Thanks to Bloom’s support, they’ve successfully distributed over 200,000 reusable pads and 2,500 diapers, creating 23 job opportunities for local women. Millie shared exciting plans to expand their product range to include adult diapers for incontinence, aiming to support displaced families with essential hygiene products. Her dedication highlights how sustainable, locally-made solutions can bring about significant, positive change.

Made by Nature – Mark and Christiane Beyrouthy

Mark and Christiane from Made by Nature took the stage to discuss their mission of promoting authentic Lebanese cuisine and artisanal products. Their initiative has connected over 4,000 community members with 550 local brands, fostering a thriving ecosystem for local producers. From hosting farmers’ markets to creating botanical gardens and running an online shop, Made by Nature ensures that Lebanese artisans flourish. Their “From All Lebanon to All Lebanon” campaign is a shining example of how community-driven efforts can support displaced families by sourcing and distributing essential goods.

Sustainable Stitch – Farah Abi Mosleh

Farah presented Sustainable Stitch, a group dedicated to empowering women through sewing and upcycling. Initially focused on providing immediate aid to pregnant women and new mothers, they have now transitioned to creating sustainable products like winter clothes and diapers. Farah emphasized the importance of long-term income opportunities for women, showcasing how adaptability and innovation are key to successful social entrepreneurship. Her work highlights the vital role of sustainable practices in building resilient communities.

The Studio – Bahia Assi

Bahia shared the inspiring journey of The Studio, which empowers Syrian and Palestinian women artisans. With 100 women trained in camps, The Studio has successfully recreated and sold new products, collaborating with marketplaces in Lebanon and the Gulf. During recent conflicts, they swiftly adapted by producing hats and scarves for displaced children, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to both economic stability and community resilience.

Collaborative Discussions: Building Support Networks

Following the presentations, the event transitioned into a dynamic discussion on how everyone can contribute to these impactful efforts. Participants explored various ways to offer support and assistance, highlighting the significant role of Bloom’s mentorship program. Key points included:

  1. Enhancing Skills: Many attendees expressed interest in receiving pro bono consultancy, particularly in areas like management and strategic planning, to further strengthen their organizations.
  2. Effective Marketing: Strategies for balancing the promotion of social impact with maintaining authenticity were a common focus. Ensuring fair pricing while telling genuine stories was emphasized as crucial for sustainable growth.
  3. Building Partnerships: The importance of fostering long-term partnerships to sustain and expand initiatives was a key takeaway, underscoring the value of collaborative efforts.

Millie highlighted how external support in financial management had been transformative for WingWoman Lebanon. Bahia discussed the importance of authentic storytelling in marketing their products to maintain sustainability and avoid superficial narratives. Farah emphasized the value of long-term partnerships to sustain and grow their initiatives.

Envisioning a Collaborative Future

As the event came to a close, the host shared a hopeful vision for the future. Imagine walking into a store in Lebanon and finding products from these amazing social enterprises as the norm. Picture reusable pads from WingWoman, fresh food from Made by Nature, handmade hats from The Studio, and sustainable clothing from Sustainable Stitch—all contributing to a more equitable and resilient community.

The vision is clear: by fostering partnerships between local communities and the global diaspora, we can create a robust support system for sustainable growth. Participants left the meeting feeling motivated and connected, ready to continue building momentum together.

How Green SMEs Are Transforming Climate Action

Insights from Bloom’s Green Catalyst Initiative

How do small businesses fighting climate change get the support they need? That’s what Bloom’s Green Catalyst Africa event, “Unblocking Challenges & Accelerating Support – Participatory Discussion”, set out to explore on November 18, 2024. Over 90 minutes, changemakers came together to unpack barriers, exchange ideas, and imagine what’s possible when green enterprises are given the tools they need to thrive.

Participants and key partners from across the globe joined forces, bringing diverse perspectives and a shared drive to tackle these challenges head-on.

Why SMEs Are the Backbone of Climate Solutions

Across Africa, green SMEs are pioneering innovative, community-based solutions to climate challenges. These enterprises demonstrate how grassroots efforts can drive meaningful impact:

Juveline Ngum Ngwa in Cameroon: As the CEO of Bleaglee Waste Management, Juveline uses drones equipped with AI to detect waste in waterways that cause flooding. Her team works with youth groups and informal waste collectors to clean and recycle the waste, turning it into products like fuel. Her efforts not only prevent disasters but also create jobs and promote sustainability. Juveline has expanded her work to Senegal, showcasing how local solutions can scale to tackle regional challenges.

Deborah Nzarubara in the Democratic Republic of Congo: Through her company, Green Community Mind (GRECOM), Deborah leverages AI and IoT technologies to modernize beekeeping and promote regenerative agriculture. Her NYUKI TECH project empowers local farmers to increase yields while fostering biodiversity, making a tangible impact on sustainable farming practices.

Chinasa Stephanie-Meltus in Nigeria: As the Co-Founder and CEO of Green Eden Farms, Stephanie developed “Scaregrow”, a digital scarecrow technology that provides farmers with real-time insights to protect crops and reduce losses. Her innovation offers a scalable, climate-smart agricultural solution, helping farmers adapt to changing environmental conditions while boosting productivity.

These stories highlight the power of local innovation to create tangible change. Yet, moving from small wins to large-scale impact requires collaboration, funding, and systems designed to support growth.

What’s Holding Green Enterprises Back?

Funding Gaps: SMEs often lack access to investors or programs tailored to their needs. Traditional grants help but don’t address long-term growth.

Complex Finance Processes: In traditional finance, standard agreements and templates simplify deals. In green or “blended finance,” where grants, loans, and private investments are combined to reduce risks, these tools are often missing, making funding painfully slow.

Lack of Visibility: These businesses rarely have a seat at major climate discussions, where decisions about resources and priorities are made.

These challenges aren’t just frustrating, they’re holding back solutions the world desperately needs.

What We Learned: Real Takeaways from the Discussion

So how do we fix this? Key ideas emerged during the event:

Combine Funding Streams: Blended finance can bridge the gap between donor funding and private investments, helping SMEs access sustainable financing models.

Collaborate, Don’t Compete: Funders, accelerators, and ecosystem enablers must work together to build systems that support SMEs at every stage.

Build from the Ground Up: Start by addressing the needs of grassroots enterprises while creating scalable solutions that reach across regions.

How Bloom’s Green Catalyst Initiative Is Paving the Way

Green Catalyst Africa is about identifying opportunities and building the systems green SMEs need to succeed. Some of the ideas discussed during the session include:

A Sustainability Campus: A potential platform to teach green skills and support early-stage entrepreneurs in developing impactful, scalable solutions.

Stronger Partnerships: Connecting SMEs with organizations that provide hands-on support, helping them bridge the gap between ideas and action.

Global Advocacy: Amplifying African voices at events like COP29 and the UNCCD COP16 to ensure green SMEs are part of key global climate discussions.

While some of these initiatives are still ideas in development, they represent actionable pathways to create long-lasting systems of support for green enterprises.

How You Can Help

The Green Catalyst Initiative thrives on collaboration. Whether you’re an individual, an organization, or part of a larger network, there’s a way for you to contribute:

Become a Partner: Collaborate with us to scale impact through strategic support, knowledge-sharing, or joint projects. We’re always looking for innovative ways to work together.

Support Financially: Your donations—tax-deductible via our 501(c)(3) sponsor—help drive meaningful change in climate action, inclusive growth, and community engagement.

Engage Your Network: Amplify our work by sharing Bloom’s mission and connecting us with individuals or organizations passionate about green enterprise growth. You can reach out to us at connect@bloom.pm.

These enterprises, driven by a mission to address social challenges through innovative business models, are uniquely positioned to foster resilience, empower communities, and create lasting change that endures beyond the immediate aftermath of disaster.

The Role of Social Enterprises in Crisis Recovery

Social enterprises operate at the intersection of profit and purpose, addressing critical social issues while generating economic value. During crises, they often pivot to meet emerging needs, leveraging their deep community ties and innovative approaches. In Lebanon, local initiatives such as Made By Nature and Sustainable Stitch have been pivotal in delivering essentials to displaced families. Made By Nature supports small-scale Lebanese farmers by purchasing local produce and distributing it to families in need. Similarly, Sustainable Stitch tailors care packages—including baby clothes, blankets, diapers, and milk—for mothers and newborns in shelters, ensuring that some of the most vulnerable are cared for during challenging times.

Investing in these organizations during times of crisis not only supports immediate relief efforts but also strengthens the social fabric, ensuring that communities are better equipped to handle future challenges. By bolstering social enterprises, we enable them to continue their vital work, fostering economic stability and social cohesion.

Long-Term Sustainability Through Social Enterprise Investment

Unlike traditional NGOs, social enterprises generate their income through business activities, reducing dependency on external funding. This self-sustaining model allows them to continue operations and impact even when external aid diminishes. Moreover, their focus on local solutions ensures that interventions are culturally relevant and tailored to the community’s specific needs.

A report by the World Economic Forum highlights that social enterprises account for $2 trillion in annual turnover and create 200 million jobs worldwide, underscoring their significant economic impact.

By investing in these enterprises, we address immediate needs and support sustainable economic growth. Initiatives such as The Volunteer Circle exemplify this approach by coordinating skilled volunteers to support NGOs in Lebanon with food distribution, logistics, and education, helping amplify the impact of local efforts.

Social Enterprises in Lebanon and Palestine

In regions like Lebanon and Palestine, social enterprises play a crucial role in addressing the challenges of ongoing conflicts and economic instability. These organizations often emerge as vital actors in providing essential services, creating employment opportunities, and fostering social cohesion.

In Lebanon, social enterprises have responded to crises by uniting to address urgent humanitarian needs while fostering long-term economic and social development. This movement represents a fundamental shift, transforming crisis response into a sustainable, community-driven effort that builds resilience from within.

Organizations like Wing Woman Lebanon and The Studio have emerged as critical actors. Wing Woman Lebanon provides dignity kits—reusable menstrual pads and diapers for women and infants—ensuring hygiene and comfort even in challenging times. The Studio empowers local artisans to craft crochet balaclavas, offering warmth to displaced children while providing sustainable income for the artisans.

Similarly, in Palestine, social enterprises have been pivotal in rebuilding the business ecosystem amidst ongoing conflicts. Despite the destruction of infrastructure and economic challenges, these enterprises have demonstrated resilience and adaptability, contributing to their communities’ economic and social fabric.

Program Management in Crisis

Strategies for Resilience, Adaptability, and Compassionate Leadership

Effective program management becomes a linchpin for maintaining focus, stability, and morale in times of crisis. This function takes on a new dimension, with resilience and adaptability at the forefront. At Bloom, we’ve found that navigating these challenging times requires a shift from conventional management practices to a more flexible, human-centered approach.

Here, we share our insights on managing programs through crisis, drawing from our recent experiences and the strategies that have helped us stay aligned and focused, even when external pressures mount.

Prioritizing Crisis-Responsive Planning

Program management in times of crisis requires constant reassessment of priorities and resources. At Bloom, we’ve adopted a crisis-responsive planning approach, frequently revisiting our core objectives, re-evaluating available resources, and reassessing our strategies. This level of adaptability allows us to pivot quickly and make decisions that keep our projects on track even as we respond to unfolding events.

In practical terms, we recommend implementing brief, regular check-ins with your team to identify immediate needs, priorities, and any required changes. A simple tool like a crisis readiness assessment can guide these discussions, helping managers understand their team’s current capacity and any support they may need.

Strengthening Team Resilience Through Flexibility

One of the most valuable things a program manager can offer during a crisis is flexibility. Traditional timelines and rigid structures may be counterproductive in high-stress situations. Instead, managers who foster a culture of flexibility create space for team members to adapt their workflows, deadlines, and even working hours as needed.

For instance, we’ve adopted more adaptable work plans and timelines, allowing team members to adjust their schedules based on their situations while keeping deliverables in view. This helps maintain productivity and builds trust and morale, reminding everyone that we prioritize people over processes.

Setting Clear Communication Channels for Stability

Communication is everything during uncertain times. One of the first steps we took was to establish a reliable and transparent communication framework. Regular, structured updates from managers ensure everyone is aligned and informed, which helps mitigate stress from the unknown.

Our approach has been to create several layers of communication: weekly check-ins for project updates, monthly team meetings for strategic alignment, and dedicated time slots where team members can discuss their challenges in a safe, supportive space. By ensuring that communication is open and predictable, we create a sense of stability and clarity that can often feel scarce in crisis environments.

Embracing Emotional Agility in Program Management

As program managers, it’s easy to become solely task-focused, especially when the stakes are high. But emotional agility—recognizing, processing, and responding to emotions without becoming overwhelmed—is crucial in times of crisis. Supporting emotional agility within teams allows managers to address issues before they turn into burnout or disengagement.

We’ve integrated regular emotional check-ins into our meetings, where team members are encouraged to express what’s on their minds. Sometimes, taking a moment to acknowledge these feelings helps clear mental space, enabling team members to refocus on the tasks at hand. As a program manager, sensing and responding to your team’s emotional landscape is an essential skill that fosters resilience and long-term commitment.

Enhancing Adaptive Project Frameworks

For program managers, resilience also means recognizing that traditional frameworks may not always fit. Adaptive project management frameworks, which allow for course correction and resource reallocation, are particularly beneficial in crisis contexts. At Bloom, we’ve been building flexibility into our project designs, allowing us to respond effectively to new information and shifting contexts.

Project management requires nimbleness, whether adjusting timelines, rescoping a project, or reassigning roles. With these adaptive strategies, program managers create a stable and responsive structure, helping mitigate the impact of external stressors.

Cultivating a Culture of Compassionate Leadership

One of the most valuable tools we’ve discovered in navigating crisis is compassionate leadership. Compassionate leaders understand that their role isn’t simply to manage tasks and nurture the people executing them. This can mean extending understanding during difficult times, actively checking in on individual well-being, or simply leading by example with kindness.

At Bloom, this culture has created a safe space where team members feel empowered to express themselves, seek support, and contribute meaningfully. As program managers, embodying compassion fosters a supportive environment and ensures that teams stay engaged and motivated even during challenging periods.

Moving Forward with Strength and Flexibility

For program managers working in social impact organizations, managing through a crisis is more than just keeping projects on track—it’s about balancing stability with flexibility and processes with compassion.

To all program managers facing similar challenges, know that your work is vital. The effort you put into fostering resilience in these moments of crisis will have lasting, positive effects on those you lead and serve. Let’s continue to find strength in our adaptability and lift each other as we progress.
